Many of us would love to shop online from Kenya, because products are fairly priced. This is true, as most of the retailers in Kenya, purchase their products online then resell them at high prices. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you were able to purchase items online just like most of the merchants do, at very affordable prices? Am sure it would. Keep reading!
The most common websites for online purchasing are Ebay, Amazon, Aliexpress and Half.com which is a subsidiary of Ebay. Jumia offers online shopping for Kenyans, and it gives the Kenyans the convenience of paying using mpesa, or paying for items on delivery. This article shall focus more on how to shop in websites such as Ebay and Amazon.
Online shopping in Kenya can be difficult as for one to be able to purchase a product successfully one needs 2 main things which are not so popular by many. One needs a credit card and receiving address which can be a postal address, before planning to purchasing an item from ebay. Interesting thing is that getting these products is not as hard or complicated as one would imagine. So long as one is over the age of 18 and they have a national ID getting a credit card and a postal address is not so difficult A few years back having a credit card in Kenya was left for the wealthy and affluent, as credit cards was associated with people who have loads of money. The way most credit cards work is that you use the card according to the limit you have set, then at the end of the month, or a certain agreed time one is billed to pay for their use. This made getting a credit card not easy, as one had to be properly vetted and prove that they have a stable income. This mode of spending money is not convenient for most people,as one would end up using the card making purchases only to cry painfully when it comes to paying the bill at the end of the month. The idea of “buy now pay later” doesn’t sound as good as most credit card providers would put it. However with the introduction of prepaid credit cards, anyone can have access to a credit card. Once one has a credit card one needs to have an address where to receive items. If one prefers receiving via postal address, one needs to apply for a postal address at the post office of convenience. A postal address nowadays is quite easy to acquire as most people don’t use them much, hence they are widely available. A postal address would cost KES 2500 to apply which includes the fees for the first year, and one would be required to pay subsequently about KES 1000 yearly to maintain. Those prices refer to personal post office boxes, as corporate post office boxes have different pricing. Another alternative is if one is receiving an item by courier services such as DHL, one just needs to put the home address where the item would be delivered. Postal address is good if one is purchasing small sized items which are not so expensive. I can not guarantee 100% the safety of receiving items by postal address, but for smaller sized items one can take the risk, as items usually do come. I purchased an ornament online and received via postal address in about a week, so people do receive their purchases. You must be wondering “How do they fit items in the postal box”? Items are not put directly in one’s mail box. When your item arrives by post, you would find a card informing you that your item has arrived and that you need to go the Post office to pick your item. Once in the post office, you show the card and sign off for your item.
Another alternative for receiving items is acquiring a US shipping address. Yeah, its possible to have one even if you live in Kenya. MyUS.com allows one to acquire a US shipping address, and then pay for the service. They have different plans suitable for people with different kinds of shipping patterns. When shopping online, at the field for inserting your address, the US shipping address that you will have acquired is used.. The item is then shipped to that address where it is stored in a warehouse. You then ship the item from there to your location back home using courier services out there and pay for the shipping cost. This method can be expensive if shipping one item, hence its best to accumulate items, then ship them at once.
Online shopping is not difficult, and it can be fun as you can easily do it at the comfort of your home.
